Assistive Listening Devices
Helping You Hear More Clearly
Hearing aids are small, yet powerful tools, but they are not always enough in certain situations. This is where assistive listening devices (ALDs) can truly shine. Whether you are struggling to hear the television, to hear announcements in a public setting, or just follow conversations in a noisy place, ALDs are designed to support your hearing when traditional hearing aids are just not enough.
At Hear in MetroWest, we help patients find and use the right ALDs to match their hearing goals and daily routines.

What Are Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs)?
Assistive listening devices are tools that will work alongside or independently of hearing aids to make sounds clearer in specific places or types of environments. They can be instrumental in situations where there are poor room acoustics or even distance from a sound source. ALDs do not replace hearing aids but can enhance what you already have, bringing sound and speech directly to your ears.
How ALDs Support Better Hearing in Challenging Environments
Even the most advanced digital hearing aids can struggle in some environments. Background noise in restaurants, muffled speech through TV speakers, and even distance from a speaker in a large room can create obstacles.
ALDs are built to overcome these obstacles by amplifying speech at a distance, filtering out background noise, and sending audio directly to your hearing aid or headphones. Additionally, ADLs can provide visual or vibrating alerts for things like alarms or doorbells. They allow for clearer listening without the need for higher volume, which protects your hearing.
